DAVID C. HAY has spent more than twenty-five years
developing interactive, database-oriented systems. He
is president of Essential
Strategies, Inc., a consulting firm based in Houston,
using modeling techniques to help construct corporate
information strategies and architectures, and to define
information requirements. He has done this for a wide
range of industries, including pharmaceutical research,
news gathering, oil refining, and television broadcasting,
and has modeled various government agencies in the U.S.
and Canada. It was during the course of developing data
models for this diverse group of clients that he identified
the common elements that are the basis for Data Model
Patterns.
A member of the GUIDE Project on Business Rules and
the Independent Oracle Consultants Alliance, Mr. Hay
lives in Houston with his wife, Jola, and their children,
Pamela and Bob. In his spare time, he performs stand-up
comedy and pursues the ancient Japanese art of Origami.
He can fold a square piece of paper into a flower, a
dinosaur, or any of myriad other figures—without
any cutting, pasting, or swearing.
